The People Behind the Bison
Red Cedar Bison maintains a focus on the past, present and future. We are proud to be part of the long history of bison in America as a second generation bison ranch. We are working hard to care for our animals today in such a way that we care for the future generations of our bison herd, family and the land that they graze upon. And we are working hard towards our future. Recently we were asked to share more about Red Cedar Bison. What is your company’s vision?
Bison is American’s original red meat. Red Cedar Bison Ranch is dedicated to producing better than organic, quality assured bison meat. Our second generation company raises animals the old fashioned way using no growth hormones, no antibiotics and no GMO grains. Our animals get all the nutrients that they need by grazing on an organic diet of lush Tennessee grasses as they roam free. Incorporated into the vision of Red Cedar Bison Ranch is the quest to show our customers just how healthy and tasty bison meat is when compared to the mass produced red meat alternatives available to consumers.
What makes your product or business unique or innovative?
Bison ranching is in itself a unique way of life. These majestic animals can weigh over 2000 pounds, run 40 miles per hour and can jump up to 6 feet. They are completely docile until they are not. Their unpredictable nature makes the whole ranching experience even more fun and challenging. There is a saying about Bison that really encompasses their nature, “You can get a bison to do exactly what they want to do.” As you might image, patience is required, but the results are beyond amazing. Red Cedar Bison has been raising bison for the consumer market for years. It is a balancing act to maintain our highest quality standards with the economic realities of becoming a rancher today. We set the bar high for our bison meat—insisting on only producing grass-fed, grass-finished meat using no hormones, no antibiotics and absolutely no GMOS in the entire lifetime of our bison. Grass-fed and finished bison takes longer to reach market weight and costs more per head, but we want Red Cedar Bison to be the healthiest and most tasty meat possible, even though we could turn a faster profit with short cuts. Our finished product is better than organic.
How has your business made a positive impact to your customers, neighborhood, and/or community?
We are a second generation operation. At Red Cedar Bison we have risked it all to halt the progression of the disappearing American family farm, as farmland is being turned into housing developments in the fast growing communities around Nashville, Tennessee. We have gone back in time to raise animals humanely, preserving the ecosystem of our land, and create a long term sustainable ranch where the bison have room to roam in peace. Life is simple for our bison. We allow nature to take its course at its own sweet time and our ecosystem is thriving. The overdeveloped rushed pace of society is halted at the gates of Red Cedar Bison, and we like it that way. We also offer educational tours to schools throughout Tennessee that expose kids to the wonders of the American Bison. Red Cedar Bison Ranch is a growing operation with dedicated owners and the result of all this hard work is a product that our customers love. We sell our product at the Franklin Farmers Market, in several restaurants and online shipping all over the country.
